Varmint Hunting & Varmint Rifles

Deer Season is history and it is time to go after Wile Coyote and his friends. The ODHA is a proud member of the Varmint Hunters Association and looks to it for expert advice. We will look at some of the guns, loads and other equipment for varmint hunting and try our luck in Arkansas and Georgia this year and maybe a trip to the VHA Jamboree in South Dakota.

Getting Started

It doesn't cost a lot to get started hunting varmints. I most cases, you can use your shotgun, 22 rimfire, or deer rifle to hunt varmints. If you really get hooked on the sport, you may later want to invest in more calls, special firearms, or special equipment. Taking a varmint hunting trip out West is a lot cheaper than a big game hunting trip and the action can be spectacular. 500 shots a day is not uncommon on some of the large prairie dog towns in the Dakota's. But you don't have to go far for a good varmint hunt. Coyotes and crows range throughout the US. All it takes is a box of ammo and a $10 call.

Know the Regs!

Laws vary greatly from state to state so be sure to read the hunting regulations carefully. Some predators are covered by game laws and some are not. You may hunt at night in some states while in others you can not. Electronic calls are another area of concern. Some states allow the use of them for some varmints and some states do not allow the use of electronic calls at all. If that's the case, then you will need a friend like Mr. President who is full of hot air, to blow the manual calls. There are also a ton of laws in regard to the type and caliber of gun you can use for varmints.

As an example of how complex the laws can be, lets look at the Georgia regulations.

BOBCAT and FOX: Dec. 1-Feb. 15. No limit. Dog hunting is allowed. Bobcats and foxes may be hunted with small game firearms by hunters using manual calls.
Coyotes, armadillos, groundhogs, beavers, starlings, pigeons, and English sparrows: No closed season. No limit. Electronic calls may be used for hunting coyotes, except on WMAs. No firearms restrictions.
CROWS: Nov. 6-Feb. 29; No Limit; Electronic calls may be used. Crows may be taken outside of these dates only when causing agricultural damage. No firearms restrictions.
